What to expect from your appointment

Before your treatment begins, you will be asked to complete a consent form for Acupuncture and/or Dry Needling. During the session, your therapist will guide you into a comfortable seated or lying position, depending on the area being treated. You may be asked to remove certain items of clothing to allow access to specific muscles or joints.

The needles used are extremely fine, single-use, and pre-sterilised. Once inserted, they are safely disposed of after each treatment. Your therapist will select the appropriate points based on your symptoms and treatment goals. Typically, up to 12 points may be used, sometimes more or less, depending on your condition.

The needles may be inserted just below the surface of the skin or deeper into the muscle tissue, depending on the desired therapeutic effect. Once in place, they are usually left for several minutes, up to around 30 minutes and may occasionally be gently rotated during the session.

Acupuncture and Dry Needling are often integrated into a broader Physiotherapy session to maximise treatment outcomes and support your recovery.

FAQs

What are Acupuncture and Dry Needling?

Acupuncture and dry needling are therapeutic techniques that help promote healing, reduce pain, and restore function.

Acupuncture has its roots in Traditional Chinese Medicine, with a history spanning over 2,000 years. It focuses on stimulating specific points along the body’s energy pathways (or meridians) and has been widely integrated into Western medicine based on a growing body of clinical evidence.

Dry needling, while similar in technique, is a more modern, Western approach. It targets myofascial trigger points, which are tight bands of muscle commonly associated with pain and restricted movement. Both methods are offered at The Body Reset Clinic as part of a personalised treatment plan.

What Conditions can they help with?

Acupuncture and Dry Needling are used to treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Back and neck pain
  • Shoulder tension and frozen shoulder
  • Sciatica
  • Joint pain (hips, knees, ankles, etc.)
  • Muscle strains, tightness, and spasms
  • Tendonitis and repetitive strain injuries
  • Arthritis and chronic inflammatory pain
  • Sports injuries and recovery support

These treatments can be used alone or, more commonly, as part of a wider Physiotherapy plan to enhance recovery and speed up results. Your therapist will assess your condition and decide on the most effective approach for your needs.

How do they work?

Acupuncture and Dry Needling both involve the insertion of fine, sterile needles into the body, but they differ slightly in their approach and underlying philosophy.

Acupuncture

At The Body Reset Clinic, we use Acupuncture as part of a modern, evidence-based approach to pain relief and rehabilitation. While acupuncture originates from Traditional Chinese Medicine, we apply it within a Western medical framework to support the body’s natural healing processes.

Acupuncture works to help:

  • Stimulate the nervous system
  • Release natural pain-relieving chemicals such as endorphins and serotonin
  • Improve blood flow and oxygen delivery to tissues
  • Reduce inflammation and calm the stress response

This makes acupuncture an effective treatment not only for musculoskeletal pain, but also for symptoms related to stress, tension, and poor sleep. It is often integrated with physiotherapy techniques to enhance overall recovery and well-being.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is a Western technique that targets myofascial trigger points which are tight knots within muscles that can cause pain or restrict movement. The needle is inserted directly into these points to:

  • Release muscular tension
  • Improve range of motion
  • Disrupt pain signals to the brain
  • Promote healing by increasing blood flow and stimulating tissue repair

Dry needling focuses more specifically on musculoskeletal dysfunction and is often used for sports injuries, chronic tightness, or postural issues.

In both cases, the goal is to reduce pain, improve function, and stimulate your body’s natural ability to heal. Your therapist will choose the most suitable technique (or a combination of both) based on your condition and treatment goals.

Does it hurt?

Most clients report only mild discomfort during treatment. You may feel a dull ache, tingling, or a slight twitch when the needle is inserted, especially during dry needling, which targets sensitive trigger points. These sensations are completely normal and usually short-lived. You should not feel sharp or intense pain.
